Mooring Buoys

As part of Diveaway Fiji's mission to reduce reef threats in Fiji, we have led an effort by community members and marine recreation providers to install mooring buoys in the Taqaqe qoliqoli.

When dive boats and live-aboards use the mooring buoys instead of anchors, damage to the reef is greatly reduced. Plans are in the works for additional moorings to protect even larger areas of the reef.

PADI Project AWARE has provided microgrants for mooring installations in our dive areas.

As an eco-operator, we will…
As an eco-operator, we will…
  • Provide dive experiences that enhance visitor awareness, appreciation and understanding of the local aquatic environment.
  • Use recycled products whenever possible.
  • Participate in local conservation efforts and support established parks and reserves.
  • Not sell items made from endangered species, threatened species, corals or tropical hardwoods.
  • Respect local people, culture and traditions while abiding by local laws and regulations.

Protect the Sharks
Why do sharks need our protection? Many shark species are endangered and could soon become extinct without our help. According to the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), approximately 100 million sharks are killed each year. Due to their slow growth, late sexual maturity and low number of offspring, they are susceptible to almost any fishing pressure.

Few countries have shark management plans in place. And, the demand for shark products like shark meat, fins and cartilage further contributes to their decline.

10 Things You Can Do
1. Avoid purchasing souvenirs made from coral or any threatened or endangered marine species.

2. Support the establishment of coral reef protected areas and encourage better protection and management for those that exist.

3. While traveling, choose resorts and tour operators that properly treat all sewage and wastewater.

4. While operating a boat, navigate carefully to avoid contact with coral reefs and other vulnerable ecosystems such as seagrass beds and maintain engine equipment to prevent oil and gas spills.
